Do Indian citizens need permits to visit Sikkim and Nathula Pass?
Indian citizens do not need permits to enter standard destinations in Sikkim (like Gangtok or Pelling). However, visiting Protected Areas such as Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, and North Sikkim (Lachung/Gurudongmar) strictly requires a Protected Area Permit (PAP) issued by Sikkim Tourism and the Indian Army. We require valid government photo ID and passport-sized photographs 24-48 hours in advance to process permits.
Can foreign nationals visit Nathula Pass?
No. Under Indian Ministry of Home Affairs regulations, Nathula Pass (the international border post) is open exclusively to Indian nationals. However, foreign passport holders with a valid Sikkim Inner Line Permit (ILP) can visit Gangtok, Pelling, and Tsomgo Lake (accompanied by a registered Sikkim tour operator).
When is the best time to see Mount Kanchenjunga clearly from Darjeeling?
The most transparent skies with crisp mountain views occur from October through December (autumn/early winter) and March through May (spring). During July and August, heavy monsoon clouds typically obscure high-altitude vistas.
How far are Darjeeling and Gangtok from Bagdogra Airport (IXB) and NJP Railway Station?
Bagdogra Airport (IXB) and New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) are both located in Siliguri. Darjeeling is approximately 70 km away (about 3 to 3.5 hours by mountain road). Gangtok is approximately 120-125 km away (about 4.5 to 5.5 hours along the Teesta valley corridor).
