The quintessential Eastern Himalayas experience: tea country of Darjeeling, cultural pulse of Gangtok, and high-altitude alpine passes of East Sikkim.
Mountain terrain demands realistic travel times and strict permit preparedness. We prioritize your comfort with clear logistical principles:
We assign dedicated local mountain vehicles (Toyota Innova, Crysta, or Mahindra Scorpio) suited for high-altitude passes. No crowded group shuttles.
Nathula Pass and North Sikkim require formal army and state clearances. We manage the paperwork in Gangtok with zero queue stress for you.
Ascending directly from the plains to 14,000+ feet causes acute altitude sickness. Our itineraries mandate gentle stage acclimation in Gangtok.
Real practical answers to common traveler questions regarding Eastern Himalayas permits, weather, and road transit.
Indian citizens do not need permits to enter standard destinations in Sikkim (like Gangtok or Pelling). However, visiting Protected Areas such as Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, and North Sikkim (Lachung/Gurudongmar) strictly requires a Protected Area Permit (PAP) issued by Sikkim Tourism and the Indian Army. We require valid government photo ID and passport-sized photographs 24-48 hours in advance to process permits.
No. Under Indian Ministry of Home Affairs regulations, Nathula Pass (the international border post) is open exclusively to Indian nationals. However, foreign passport holders with a valid Sikkim Inner Line Permit (ILP) can visit Gangtok, Pelling, and Tsomgo Lake (accompanied by a registered Sikkim tour operator).
The most transparent skies with crisp mountain views occur from October through December (autumn/early winter) and March through May (spring). During July and August, heavy monsoon clouds typically obscure high-altitude vistas.
Bagdogra Airport (IXB) and New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) are both located in Siliguri. Darjeeling is approximately 70 km away (about 3 to 3.5 hours by mountain road). Gangtok is approximately 120-125 km away (about 4.5 to 5.5 hours along the Teesta valley corridor).
Gangtok (5,400 ft) and Darjeeling (6,700 ft) are comfortable for most travelers. However, Nathula Pass sits at 14,140 feet and Gurudongmar Lake exceeds 17,000 feet. We strongly recommend spending at least 24-48 hours acclimatizing in Gangtok before heading to Nathula, staying well hydrated, and avoiding strenuous exertion at high passes.
