Best Time to Visit Sikkim & Darjeeling
The Eastern Himalayas have four distinct seasons. Choosing the right month shapes your mountain visibility, road safety, and overall journey.
🍂 Autumn (October to mid-December) • Peak Season
Weather: Crisp, clear, sunny days with cool nights (10°C to 18°C day, 2°C to 8°C night).
Visibility: Clearest skies of the year. 95%+ morning visibility of Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). Ideal for high passes and photography.
🌸 Spring (March to May) • The Rhododendron Bloom
Weather: Pleasant warmth (12°C to 20°C). Wild rhododendrons, magnolias, and orchids bloom across Yumthang Valley and Varsey.
Highlight: Vibrant colors, comfortable walking conditions for families and elderly travelers.
❄️ Winter (December to February) • Snow & Frost
Weather: Freezing cold at high passes (-5°C to -15°C at Nathula and Gurudongmar).
Highlight: Frozen Tsomgo Lake, snowfields, clear winter mornings along the Darjeeling ridge.
🌧️ Monsoon (July to September) • The Lush Tea Flush
Weather: Heavy mountain rainfall, frequent landslides along NH10 Teesta gorge.
Note: High passes not recommended. Excellent for slow stays in heritage Darjeeling tea bungalows.
